Congress might welcome its first openly atheist member in November

Maryland state senator Jamie Raskin can become the first congress member elected to office

Maryland state senator Jamie Raskin (D) won his state’s primary on Tuesday. His opponent put $12.7 million of his own money to his own campaign and lost, the amount is record-setting for a self-funded U.S. House campaign.

If he wins again in November, he can become the first openly atheist member of Congress.

He is a member of nonprofit group called American Humanist Association which lobbyists to separate church and state.

Pete Stark (Calif-D) first acknowledged he was an atheist but was already been serving in Congress and has been for 30 years.
